Getting To Know MTV Wild N Out’s Corey Charron; A Down To Earth and Skilled Entertainer in the Industry
In this highlight we turn our attention to Corey Charron of MTV’s Wildn Out. I asked Corey a series of questions, here is what we discussed;
Tell us a little about yourself, where your from, grew up, what H.S./College you attended etc.
I’m from Canada so I either had to make it as a rapper or become a Mountie like my father and his father before him. I attended St Peters Catholic high school (Ottawa, Ontario) and took pre music production at Algonquin College. I dropped out to compete in a battle rap contest in Oakland. But now I’m invited to speak to the students every year so it kind of worked out I guess.
What inspired you to be get into entertainment? Early experiences worth sharing?
Stop reading if you cringe at white rappers being inspired by 8 mile! I watched B Rabbit bodybag Poppa Doc and I was just like sign me up for this. I wasn’t coordinated or athletic so this was right up my alley.
Talk about a time where you have faced adversity/conflict and have triumphed.
In 2013 I ended up winning the B.E.T. Freestyle Friday tournament in New York. I took a 12 hour greyhound every week for 7 weeks straight and ended up winning Taco Bell gift cards. 5000 bucks and a spot on the BET cypher. I received the money and the T Bell gift cards (which didn’t work in Canada lol) but they excluded me from the cypher for whatever reason. I put out a diss track towards them and it got news coverage all across Canada and eventually I was invited to participate in the cypher next year.
What do you believe sets you apart from other entertainers?
I think my ability to freestyle rap sets me apart. I am probably the worst dancer on the planet. I consider that a talent to be honest.
Do you have other interests or hobbies?
I love travelling. Going on vacation is pretty much my favorite hobby. The beautiful part about being an entertainer as you can get paid to travel the world.
Any projects you have out or currently working on?
Just finished doing some Wild N Out episodes for season 12. I was in the movie “Bodied” which was produced by Eminem. It comes out November 3rd so check that out! I’ll most likely be doing a rap battle with a league called KOTD. Check them out if you enjoy rap battles.
Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years?
I just want to keep entertaining people. Whether it’s writing for a show, being an actor or doing rap battles. In an ideal world I’d have my own TV show involving rap battles.
What advice can you give to aspiring entertainers?
Don’t be afraid to fail. I’ve taken so many L’s in my life and just felt like giving up. It’s such a slow process but the journey is the best part.
How can we follow along in your journey? Social media?
Follow me on insta: Charronkotd. I don’t use twitter but you can add Corey Charron and Facebook if you want to be my friend.
